It’s nearly 7PM, and I’m wandering the halls of the Lincoln building trying to look like I know where I’m going.
LYON HEALY HARP UTAH FULL
My harp teacher had been urging me to connect with other harp students for months, but for a dyed-in-the-wool introvert with a full time office job whose harp practice was an excuse to take a break from people, connecting through music was an overwhelming prospect. Surrounded by pedal harpists (would a lever harp student fit in?). A harp event coming to Portland? Yes, please! I went online and registered with mild trepidation about being The golden ticket (read: flyer) to Harptacular 2018! As luck would have it, I received a flyer from Lyon & Healy in the mail. A lack of defined goals, a disorganized approach to practice, and isolation were the culprits, but I wouldn’t have been able to identify them as the problem if you had asked me. Although my enthusiasm had carried me through nearly two years of weekly lessons, around the two-year mark I began experiencing frequent bouts of frustration and the sense that I was spinning my wheels without making progress. I began taking harp lessons about two and a half years ago with the vague goal of learning to play, but the motivational power of that goal was rapidly losing steam. In September I had the exhilarating opportunity to attend the Lyon & Healy Harptacular event in Portland, and it couldn’t have come at a more perfect time. Lyon & Healy originally posted this photo on Facebook and I am sharing it here with their permission. Along with learning pieces, students will become well-rounded musicians by also working on music theory, scales and arpeggios, technical exercises, orchestral excerpts, music history relevant to their current pieces, and confidence with performing.Sasha Boldachev performs at the Lyon & Healy Harptacular event in Portland, OR in September 2018. In my teaching I emphasize musicality and expression, achieved by proper technique, and keeping the body relaxed and in line with the instrument to prevent tension and injury. This is a fun way for students to showcase their hard work and build their confidence performing in front of others! Group lessons and other extra activities, such as service opportunities and workshops, are also incorporated throughout the year. Recitals are held twice a year and are welcome for students of any skill level to participate in. 30-minute lessons are advisable mostly for younger students. Lessons can be 30 minutes or one hour long. Lessons are held once every week, and payment is due at the beginning of the month. You can also rent harps through Lyon & Healy, Harps Etc, and The Harp Connection. Purchasing routes for Utah residents include Lyon & Healy in Salt Lake City, Summerhayes Music in Murray, or used options such as KSL CLassifieds. You can purchase new or used harps, or rent a harp. I love teaching and welcome pupils of all ages, with or without previous musical training! I teach both lever and pedal harp, and in my studio I have one concert grand extended pedal harp, one mid-sized lever harp, and one small lap harp.Ī harp of your own is essential for practice outside of lessons. The harp is a great instrument to learn because of its uniqueness and diverse musical capacity. Learning an instrument is rewarding, challenging, and amazing.
